 An inspiration speech concerning Laudatio Si, the current environmental crises and the actions which need to be taken. This was delivered to the Marist Family of Brothers, Fathers, Sisters and Laity using Zoom in February 2021. This journey is be taken together. We as people are integrally connected to the world who is suffering. We need leaders to emerge. Together we must become more aware so that we might respond as a community both locally in connection to our brothers and sisters across the world. | | | 27 July 2025

The event will be held at various Marist sites in Hunters Hill in Sydney, beginning with Mass at 10:00am at Holy Name of Mary Church, followed by a walking tour of the Marist Fathers' Villa Maria site, a light lunch, and a walking tour of St Joseph’s College.  Australia Day, celebrated on January 26, commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 and the beginning of British colonization. However, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, this date marks the start of invasion, loss of land, and cultural destruction. Rather than a unifying celebration, many view it as a day of mourning — often called Invasion Day or Survival Day. Critically, January 26 only became the nationally recognized date for Australia Day in 1992, making the tradition relatively recent. Beginning with a heartfelt prayer that acknowledges the suffering, dignity, and humanity of homeless individuals, it calls for compassion and action in the spirit of Christ. The activity centers around the documentary Oasis – Homeless Shelter in Sydney, encouraging students to identify and explore five social justice issues, their broader impacts, the role of personal choice, and how the Salvation Army responds with care. Extension videos provide real-world insights into homelessness in Australia, including economic hardship, rental pressures, and childhood displacement.  The ABC Australian Story about Dr. Anne O'Neill offers a profound and emotional narrative of her resilience and recovery following a harrowing family tragedy. At 24, Dr. O'Neill was stalked, harassed, and intimidated by her estranged husband for 18 months. This culminated in a tragic night when he broke into her home and fatally shot their two children before turning the gun on himself, leaving Dr. O'Neill severely wounded and ultimately leading to the amputation of her leg. | | |
